Rishikesh, February 11: The central government issued new guidelines on the singing of ‘Vande Mataram‘ on Wednesday. Mahant Lokesh Das Maharaj of the Shri Jagannath Ashram welcomed this decision. He stated that this is not merely a religious song but the voice of India’s soul, deserving respect from every citizen, regardless of their faith.
He remarked, “I welcome this decision because it is not a religious song but a national anthem. Everyone living in this country should sing it, whether they are in a temple or a madrasa. It is more than just a song; it embodies the essence of India. When we sing it, we convey a message of unity despite our diverse languages, attire, and backgrounds.”
Supporting the government’s stance, Lokesh Das Maharaj noted, “I have often seen individuals refuse to sing the national anthem or song due to their religious beliefs. They claim their faith does not permit it. However, I want to emphasize that this is not a religious song; it is a national anthem. If you wish to live in India, you must respect the national anthem and song so that questions about your national pride do not arise.”
He also pointed out that there are instances where some individuals do not stand or show respect during the national anthem or song, which can imply a lack of reverence for India. The Mahant urged, “If you are a citizen of India, you should honor the national anthem and song and adhere to their protocols.”
He further asserted that those who do not comply with these rules could be considered traitors. Such individuals should consider leaving the country. He emphasized that our national anthem beautifully conveys the message of unity in diversity.
When asked about madrasas, he stated that ‘Vande Mataram‘ should also be played and sung there. He added, “Madrasas are part of India too. They are our fellow citizens. Many question their patriotism. If the national anthem is played there, such doubts will be dispelled.”
