Mumbai: Actress Ada Sharma’s 2023 film ‘The Kerala Story’ received widespread attention for its sensitive portrayal of a difficult subject. One of the most emotional moments in the film is a telephone scene where Ada’s character, Shalini Unnikrishnan, speaks to her mother while trapped in ISIS captivity.
In an exclusive conversation with a news agency, Ada shared a touching and humorous anecdote from the film’s shooting. She revealed that several scenes were so intense that the entire film crew often found themselves in tears, especially during the telephone scene.
Trending“‘The Kerala Story’ is very close to my heart and holds many memorable moments,” Ada said. “The telephone scene, which comes near the end of the film, was particularly special. In it, my character is imprisoned in an Afghan jail and talking to her mother who is in Kerala. The director, Sudipto Sen, insisted on shooting this in a single long take without any cuts.”
Ada praised director Sudipto Sen’s unique style, stating, “Many scenes in the film involved long takes, which helped maintain the flow of the actors’ performances. This is Sudipto sir’s signature approach, and it benefits the actors immensely. While filming this scene, I was deeply emotional and crying. When Sudipto sir finally said ‘cut’, I turned around to see my hairdresser, makeup artist, director, and assistant director all in tears.”
She added with a smile, “Honestly, I needed a tissue because both my eyes and nose were watering. But everyone’s eyes were moist. When I glanced at the camera crew, the director of photography, and the lighting crew, they too were wiping away tears. Sudipto sir himself was crying, and even the assistant director standing behind him had tears streaming down. I wanted to ask the director if we could shoot another take or if this was final, but everyone was so moved that no one could speak.”
