Mauganj, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident in Mauganj, Madhya Pradesh, has led to the death of a wild elephant due to electrocution. The elephant, which was trying to eat leaves from a guava tree near a tribal resident’s home in Malakpur village, came into contact with an exposed power line. Witnesses reported that the shock resulted in the animal’s immediate death.
Local villagers rushed to the scene after hearing about the incident, prompting a response from a forest department team that began necessary actions. Lokesh Neerapure, the District Forest Officer, stated that legal proceedings are underway regarding the elephant’s death, and a post-mortem will be conducted near Malakpur. The area where the incident occurred falls under the jurisdiction of the Forest Development Corporation and is recognized as a forest region in Mauganj.
Wildlife activist Ajay Dubey commented that the deceased elephant was female and part of a pair that had been roaming together from the Bandhavgarh area. He criticized the incident as indicative of serious lapses in monitoring elephant movements in the region. Dubey called for accountability regarding the presence of open power lines in areas frequented by elephants.
The pair of elephants had entered the forests of Sidhi after crossing the Turra hills in the Hanumana area on September 14. They remained in the forest regions near the Mauganj-Sidhi border for about five days before returning towards Malakpur. Reports indicate that this pair had been traversing the forests of Mauganj, Rewa, and Sidhi for approximately six months, passing through several villages in the Hanumana area, where they caused damage to crops and homes.
Dubey further emphasized that this incident has raised alarms about the safety of other wild elephants traveling through forest corridors in Madhya Pradesh. Wildlife advocates are now demanding improved monitoring and precautionary measures regarding power lines near elephant habitats.
