New Delhi, March 15: The Election Commission of India is set to announce the schedule for assembly elections in five states, including West Bengal, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, today. A press conference will be held at 4 PM at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The states and union territories involved in the elections also include Assam and Puducherry.

In the previous assembly elections in West Bengal, voting took place in eight phases. The Election Commission issued the notification on March 2, 2021. Voting occurred on March 27 for the first phase, April 1 for the second, April 6 for the third, April 10 for the fourth, April 17 for the fifth, April 22 for the sixth, April 26 for the seventh, and April 29 for the eighth phase. The results were declared on May 2, with the Trinamool Congress emerging victorious. West Bengal has a total of 294 assembly seats.

For the 234-member Tamil Nadu assembly, the election notification was issued on March 12, 2021. Voting was conducted in a single phase on April 6. On the same day, elections were held for the 140-member Kerala assembly and the 30-member Puducherry assembly. In Assam, elections were completed in three phases, with voting on March 27, April 1, and April 6. Assam has a total of 126 assembly seats.

The term of the West Bengal assembly ends on May 7. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making significant efforts to gain power, while the Trinamool Congress aims to retain its government. The competition will be more intense with the Congress and Left parties entering the fray.

In Tamil Nadu, the BJP is primarily contesting in alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Other regional partners in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) include Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Tamil Manila Congress, and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK). This election will witness a tough battle between the NDA and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The current term of the Tamil Nadu assembly ends on May 10.

In Kerala, the BJP’s main alliance partner is the BDJS. The regional party Twenty-20 has also joined the NDA. Additionally, parties like the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Shiv Sena, and the National People’s Party (NPP) led by Conrad Sangma are part of the NDA. A contest between the NDA and the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is anticipated. The state assembly’s term concludes on May 23, 2026.

Assam’s assembly term ends on May 20, while Puducherry’s will conclude on June 15. Currently, the BJP governs Assam, and this election is expected to be a close contest between Congress and BJP.
