Mohali, March 25: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has filed a prosecution complaint against Punjab Patwari Chamakur Lal and four other accused under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. This complaint was submitted to the Honorable Special Court (PMLA) in SAS Nagar, Mohali, on March 11, 2026.
On March 24, 2026, the court issued summons for all accused to appear before it at the pre-cognizance stage. The ED’s investigation was initiated based on an FIR registered by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau under sections 13(1)(B) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. This FIR was filed for the period from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2023, alleging that the accused amassed assets far exceeding their known sources of income.
The investigation revealed significant findings, indicating that Chamakur Lal, serving as a Patwari in the Derabassi and Kharar tehsils, had accumulated wealth well beyond his and his family’s legitimate income. The inquiry confirmed that he abused his official position to invest illegally obtained funds into both movable and immovable properties.
The ED discovered that Chamakur Lal attempted to conceal illicit funds by showing loans from relatives and acquaintances deposited into his and his family members’ bank accounts. This was an effort to present tainted money as legitimate income. Alarmingly, he also purchased a luxurious house with the proceeds of corruption. The investigation further revealed minimal cash withdrawals from bank accounts to maintain the appearance of legitimate income and to avoid scrutiny regarding his lavish lifestyle and expenditures.
According to the ED’s findings, Patwari Chamakur Lal acquired disproportionate assets worth approximately ₹2.76 crore through money obtained from scheduled offenses. The ED has already issued a provisional attachment order for properties valued at ₹2.76 crore in this case.
