Chennai, March 22: The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is heating up as the state approaches its assembly elections. Tensions are rising within the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam)-led alliance regarding the distribution of seats. The DMK leadership has taken a firm stance, informing its allied parties that they must accept the proposed seat-sharing formula by Monday, March 23, or risk delays in finalizing election preparations.
The assembly elections are scheduled for April 23, leaving little time for negotiations as the nomination process is set to begin soon.
Despite several rounds of discussions, key allied parties—including Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI(M), and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK)—have yet to agree on the proposed number of seats from the DMK. This disagreement has created an uncomfortable situation within the alliance.
VCK has been the most vocal on this issue. Party leader Thol Thirumavalavan expressed dissatisfaction in a video message regarding the limited allocation of seats. However, sources indicate that behind-the-scenes negotiations are still ongoing, and a potential agreement remains possible.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) is also seriously considering the matter. The party leadership has discussed the DMK’s proposal in several high-level meetings. Reports suggest that the number of seats offered is lower than what they expected. Currently, the party has not communicated its final stance to the DMK.
On the other hand, the recently allied DMDK stated that discussions are still in progress. Party leaders mentioned that the distribution of seats and regions will only be finalized once both sides reach an agreement.
In a related development, Kamal Haasan’s party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has rejected the proposal to contest under the DMK’s election symbol. The party has made it clear that it will enter the elections with its own ‘Torch Light’ symbol. The DMK leadership is currently considering this situation.
