New Delhi, April 19: If you seek serene beauty nestled in the Himalayas, Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh is a paradise waiting for you. Located about 250 kilometers from Leh in the Changthang region, this lake is surrounded by towering mountains. Its blue waters, vibrant skies, and tranquil atmosphere create a magical spectacle.

Perched at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters, Tso Moriri is one of the highest Ramsar Wetland sites in the world. To visit, obtaining an Inner Line Permit (ILP) is mandatory, as the area is close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Tso Moriri Lake is situated in the Rupshu Valley of Ladakh. It stretches approximately 19 to 29 kilometers long and 7 to 8 kilometers wide. The water is so clear and blue that the reflections of the snowy peaks and colorful skies are vividly visible. Locals hold this peaceful spot in high regard, often referring to it as ‘Mountain Lake’ or ‘Lake Moriri.’

Not only is Tso Moriri stunning, but it is also rich in biodiversity. Rare animals such as marmots, Tibetan wild donkeys (kiangs), ibex, and occasionally Tibetan wolves can be spotted here. During summer, migratory birds like the black-necked crane, bar-headed goose, and Brahminy duck flock to the area, making it a haven for birdwatchers. The lake is designated as a ‘Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve,’ and no camping or construction is allowed along its shores, preserving its natural beauty.

Visitors to Tso Moriri can indulge in various exciting activities. Walking along the lake’s edge, photography, and exploring the serene environment are popular pastimes. The clear skies offer a breathtaking view of countless stars at night, providing a memorable experience. Stargazing under the star-filled sky by the lake is unforgettable. Adventurers can trek through the surrounding mountains and spot wildlife, with options ranging from easy walks to challenging mountain treks.

Meeting the nomadic communities residing here is also a unique experience. Tourists get a glimpse of their traditional lifestyle, Ladakhi cuisine, and centuries-old customs, immersing themselves in the true culture of Ladakh. Historically, Tso Moriri has been a significant stop on the Silk Road trade routes, where travelers would rest and refill their water supplies. Today, it remains famous for its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

To visit Tso Moriri, obtaining an Inner Line Permit is essential, which can be acquired in Leh. The summer season is the best time to explore this breathtaking destination.
