Dhaka, August 9: Dinesh Trivedi, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, expressed strong confidence that Prime Minister Tariq Rahman and India’s Prime Minister will collaboratively resolve various issues between the two nations. Trivedi highlighted that both leaders are popular among their citizens, which he believes will facilitate the strengthening of bilateral relations following Rahman’s upcoming visit to India.
Speaking to reporters in Dhaka, Trivedi stated, “I have heard PM Tariq Rahman speak multiple times. Like our Prime Minister Modi, he is also a people’s leader. When two leaders meet, many problems can be resolved. It is essential to maintain a positive outlook rather than a negative one.”
According to The Dhaka Tribune, these remarks were made during the inauguration of the Children’s Playing Area at the Indian Visa Application Center (IVAC) on Sunday. His comments come at a time when both India and Bangladesh are working to reinforce their bilateral ties. Key pending issues, particularly the Teesta water-sharing agreement and the renewal of the Ganga water treaty, are currently under discussion.
India has invited Prime Minister Tariq Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12-13. This invitation was extended to him in his capacity as the current chair of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation).
BIMSTEC is a group of seven member countries around the Bay of Bengal and its adjoining regions. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it serves as a significant platform connecting South Asia and Southeast Asia. The five South Asian members include Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, while Myanmar and Thailand represent Southeast Asia.
During a regular press briefing held by the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that an official invitation for Rahman to visit India was sent shortly after he assumed office in February 2026.
Jaiswal added, “The Prime Minister of Bangladesh was formally invited to visit India after taking office in February 2026. Regarding the BRICS Summit, India has separately invited him to participate in the outreach session as the current chair of BIMSTEC. This summit will take place in New Delhi, and such invitations are part of the customary practice for BRICS outreach meetings, extended to leaders of other regional organizations as well.”
