Bhopal, March 9: Amid ongoing speculation about his political future, Digvijay Singh has firmly stated that he will not be leaving politics and will continue to work for the Indian National Congress.
During a press conference in Bhopal on Sunday, Singh revealed that he had personally requested the top leadership of the Indian National Congress not to nominate him for a third term in the Rajya Sabha.
Having served two terms as a Rajya Sabha member, Singh clarified that this decision should not be interpreted as his retirement from active politics. He emphasized his unwavering dedication to the Congress party and assured that he will continue to work for the party in Madhya Pradesh as he has always done.
He criticized both the state and central governments, raising issues related to farmers. In particular, he questioned the government’s failure to secure a GI tag for the state’s basmati rice.
Singh stated that not contesting the Rajya Sabha elections does not mean he will distance himself from party activities or public service. He affirmed that he will remain active in the state and will fight for the people and the party until his last breath.
He highlighted that Madhya Pradesh produces approximately 2.7 million metric tons of basmati rice annually, benefiting around 100,000 farmers.
He pointed out that this basmati, which once fetched prices three times higher than regular rice in international markets, has now fallen behind in competition due to the lack of a GI tag from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority.
The former Chief Minister cited Pakistan as an example, noting that the number of districts with GI tags for basmati rice has increased from three to 48, significantly benefiting farmers in that country in the global market.
He urged the government to take immediate action to protect the interests of Madhya Pradesh’s farmers and restore the premium status of the state’s basmati rice in international markets.
