New Delhi, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi government has expressed satisfaction over a significant agreement related to the Kishau multi-purpose project. During a cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, the cabinet passed a resolution thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Union Minister for Jal Shakti C.R. Patil for their support.
Gupta highlighted that the agreement will provide Delhi with an additional 109.9 million cubic meters (MCM) of water, which is crucial for meeting the capital’s drinking water needs. Furthermore, it will enhance the environmental flow in the Yamuna River, benefiting both the ecosystem and the residents.
Addressing water scarcity as one of Delhi’s major challenges, Gupta stated that the advancement of the Kishau project will bolster the city’s water security. It will ensure a steady supply of raw water during dry periods. The project is not only significant for the additional water it brings to Delhi but also for improving the necessary environmental flow in the Yamuna, which is vital for the river’s revitalization and environmental conservation.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude on behalf of Delhi’s 25 million residents to Amit Shah and C.R. Patil for their roles in advancing this crucial agreement. She also thanked the governments of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan for their cooperation in moving the Kishau project forward. Gupta noted that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the central government has been addressing long-pending issues through dialogue and consensus among states, with the Kishau project being a prime example of this collaborative approach.
The Kishau multi-purpose project is one of the key water storage initiatives in the upper Yamuna basin. It will have a storage capacity of approximately 1,324 MCM, allowing for controlled distribution of water during the monsoon season. This will improve water availability for the states in the upper Yamuna basin, which is critical for Delhi’s future water needs. The additional water supply will strengthen the foundation for drinking water distribution, enhancing long-term water security in the capital and supporting the Delhi government’s efforts in groundwater recharge and water conservation.
A crucial aspect of the Kishau project is its role in improving the necessary water flow in the Yamuna River. Adequate flow is essential for the river’s ecological health. The Delhi government is actively working to keep the Yamuna clean and pure, and the benefits from the Kishau project will further bolster these efforts. Gupta emphasized that this project is vital for drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation, as well as for enhancing the environmental flow of the Yamuna. The agreement reached among six states has paved the way for this long-awaited project, formalized during a meeting chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah in June.
