Kolkata, September 15 (Daily Kiran) : West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari made a shocking claim on Tuesday, stating that the murder of his former aide, Chandranath Rath, was orchestrated by a group he referred to as the “nephew gang.” This announcement coincided with Rath’s mother, Hasirani Rath, filing her nomination as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Nandigram assembly constituency, ahead of the elections scheduled for October 6.
Chandranath Rath was fatally shot just two days after the results of the West Bengal assembly elections were announced, which saw a significant defeat for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). While Adhikari did not name anyone directly, his use of the term “nephew gang” was widely interpreted as a reference to Abhishek Banerjee, the TMC’s general secretary and a member of Parliament, who is also the nephew of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The Chief Minister asserted that he had credible information indicating that the “nephew gang” was involved in Rath’s murder, allegedly contracted for a sum of 2 crore rupees. He mentioned having listened to several recorded calls that he claimed linked this group to the conspiracy.
Adhikari further stated that Rath, a retired Indian Air Force personnel, was targeted because of his role as a key ally while he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly. Rath was shot at close range as he returned home to Madhyamgram.
The initial investigation was conducted by the West Bengal police but has since been taken over by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). To date, seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder, although the identity of the masterminds remains unclear.
