Delhi High Court Considers Petition to Halt Protest in Connaught Place

The Delhi High Court is set to hear a petition seeking to prevent a protest in Connaught Place, citing potential disruptions to traffic and local businesses.

New Delhi, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court is preparing to hear a petition concerning a planned protest by the “Cockroach People’s Party” (CJP) scheduled for October 16 at Central Park in Connaught Place. The petitioners argue that the demonstration could significantly disrupt daily life and harm local businesses.

Senior lawyer Sachin Puri presented the case before Acting Chief Justice Nitin W. Sambre, requesting immediate interim relief to prevent the gathering in the heart of the national capital. He expressed concerns that the protest could lead to severe traffic congestion throughout Connaught Place and disrupt commercial activities, especially during the busy Dussehra weekend.

Puri emphasized that the protest could effectively shut down the entire Connaught Place area, hampering the movement of people and causing financial losses for local vendors and businesses.

The High Court acknowledged that the Supreme Court is already hearing related cases. The petition was filed by Anil Kumar Gupta, a street vendor in Connaught Place, who is seeking to prohibit the CJP from holding any demonstrations in Central Park or other locations not designated for protests.

Gupta has also called for a broader ban on protests in central Delhi to avoid any disruption to public life and business operations. This protest coincides with CJP founder Abhijit Dipke‘s call for supporters to gather at Central Park at 5 PM on Friday to raise the national flag in response to the arrests of party coordinators Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.

In a video message posted on social media platform X, Dipke labeled the planned protest “Lahara Do Tiranga” and urged people to participate, insisting that raising the national flag is not a crime. Das and Ranka were remanded to five days of judicial custody on Wednesday for unauthorized entry at Jantar Mantar.
