Defense Minister Chairs First IGOM Meeting on West Asia Situation and Its Impact on India

New Delhi, March 28: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the inaugural meeting of the Informal Group of Ministers (IGOM) on Saturday. This group was formed to monitor the evolving situation in West Asia and recommend proactive measures in response to developments. The meeting took place at Duty Bhawan-2 in New Delhi and included key ministers such as Nirmala Sitharaman (Finance and Corporate Affairs), Kiren Rijiju (Parliamentary Affairs), Hardeep Singh Puri (Petroleum and Natural Gas), Manohar Lal (Power), Jagat Prakash Nadda (Chemicals and Fertilizers), Prahlad Joshi (Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution), Jyotiraditya Scindia (Civil Aviation), and Dr. Jitendra Singh (Minister of State for Science and Technology).

The IGOM assessed the changing dynamics in India and their implications across various sectors. The Defense Minister emphasized the need for a proactive, coordinated, and visionary approach, highlighting the importance of remaining vigilant in light of the shifting landscape.

During the meeting, seven empowered groups of secretaries presented their findings, outlining key regional issues and existing policy measures to address the situation. Rajnath Singh instructed the groups to maintain a close watch on developments, adopt a medium to long-term preparedness strategy, ensure high-level coordination, and facilitate quick decision-making. He stressed that all policy efforts must be coordinated and implemented in a timely manner, while also soliciting creative suggestions from all relevant ministers to keep India resilient and prepared.

The IGOM underscored the significance of close coordination with state and district administrations, as well as the timely dissemination of information regarding major policy initiatives to the public. The necessity to evaluate the impact of the situation on various industries was also discussed. It was directed that all ministries and departments share relevant information, updates, and advisories related to the current situation through the MIB WhatsApp channel. This aims to ensure accurate information reaches citizens and effectively counter misinformation, rumors, and fake news.

Following the meeting, the Defense Minister posted on social media platform X, reaffirming the government’s commitment, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, to protect the Indian populace from any adverse effects of conflict.
