New Delhi, June 9: In a significant move aimed at enhancing the country’s energy security and promoting green energy, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has granted approval for a 250 megawatt solar energy project on defense land in the former cantonment area of Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh. This initiative marks the first large-scale solar energy project to be developed on defense land by the Ministry of Defense.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the project will also incorporate a battery energy storage system. It will be developed on approximately 850 acres of vacant defense land. The project aims to provide clean and reliable electricity to defense establishments while reducing dependence on traditional grid power. This will strengthen energy security in the defense sector and is expected to lead to significant savings in government expenditure over the long term.
The initiative also seeks to optimize the use of idle defense land. Through this project, not only will renewable energy production be boosted, but it will also contribute to national goals of environmental protection and reduction of carbon emissions.
On Tuesday, the Ministry of Defense announced that the project will be developed by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) through a competitive bidding process. This approach ensures that electricity is provided to defense establishments at the most economical rates. Close coordination among the Ministry of Defense, Army Headquarters, and the Directorate General of Defense Estates will be maintained throughout the process.
The Ministry of Defense states that this project represents a unique blend of national security, energy security, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability. It will ensure long-term energy availability for the armed forces while alleviating the financial burden of electricity purchases on the government. Once completed, the solar energy park in Sitapur will be among the most significant renewable energy projects established on defense land in the country, serving as a model for future solar energy and energy storage projects in the defense sector.
Experts believe that this initiative will not only accelerate the Ministry of Defense’s green energy strategy but also play a crucial role in building a self-reliant and energy-secure India.
