Deadly Fireworks Explosion in Bihar Raises Questions About Illegal Operations
A fireworks explosion in Siwan, Bihar, claims lives and highlights ongoing illegal operations despite previous incidents.

Siwan, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : A devastating explosion during fireworks production in Alamapur village, Siwan district, has reignited concerns over illegal fireworks operations and local administrative oversight. While villagers report six fatalities, authorities have confirmed the recovery of five bodies. One child has been injured and is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital. The blast was so powerful that it completely destroyed the house where the fireworks were being made.
Residents claim that fireworks manufacturing has been ongoing at Amiruddin Miyan’s home for the last 35 to 40 years. They recall a similar explosion occurring approximately 26 years ago, which resulted in the deaths of Amiruddin’s son, Amurat, and a local named Bihari Mahto, while Amiruddin himself sustained injuries. Despite this history, the production of fireworks continued unabated.
According to Jiv Narayan Yadav, a representative of the local panchayat, four to five homes in the village have been involved in fireworks manufacturing. He noted that demand for fireworks during weddings, Chhath Puja, and Muharram provided a lucrative income for these operations. Yadav also mentioned that about ten years ago, authorities conducted a raid that led to arrests, and the case is reportedly still pending in court.
In the aftermath of the explosion, local authorities have sealed off the area and initiated a search operation. Excavators are being used to clear debris, and efforts are underway to recover materials related to the blast. During the search, explosives were discovered in a rice field behind Amiruddin’s house. There are concerns that individuals may have discarded explosives and materials used in fireworks production in the fields out of fear of legal repercussions. However, confirmation of this will only be possible after a thorough investigation.
Given the severity of the incident, Siwan District Magistrate Vijay Prakash Meena has ordered an inquiry. Teams from the bomb disposal squad, forensic science lab, dog squad, fire department, and electricity department are collecting evidence. Nearby homes are also being searched. In a swift response, Siwan Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni has suspended Jamou Police Station Chief Dheeraj Kumar and watchman Chandrika Manjhi.
A probe team led by Maharajganj’s Sub-Divisional Police Officer Aman has been formed. This incident raises many questions. If, as villagers claim, fireworks production has been ongoing for so long and previous explosions have occurred, why was there no oversight? Was there a legal license for fireworks manufacturing, and how much explosive material was stored there? The police are investigating these critical aspects. Meanwhile, the search operation continues due to concerns that more victims may be trapped in the debris. The true causes of the explosion and the roles of those responsible will become clearer once the investigation concludes.
