Deadly Explosion at Chinese Fireworks Plant Claims 21 Lives, Injures 61

Changsha, May 5: A devastating explosion occurred at a fireworks plant in Hunan province, central China. According to Chinese authorities, the blast resulted in the deaths of 21 individuals, with 61 others sustaining injuries. Rescue operations commenced swiftly following the incident.

The explosion took place around 4:43 PM on Monday at the Husheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, located in Liuyang, a provincial-level city near Changsha.

Over 480 rescue personnel have been deployed in five teams, along with three rescue robots. The area surrounding the explosion site also contains two black powder warehouses. As a precaution, rescue teams evacuated nearby residents and established a buffer zone to prevent further incidents.

By 8 AM on Tuesday, rescue teams had confirmed the casualties after their initial search. The injured were transported to hospitals, and a second round of searches is ongoing.

The Ministry of Emergency Management has sent experts to assist with the rescue efforts.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the company’s manager has been detained by police, and an investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.

Rescue teams had to evacuate everyone within a 3-kilometer (1.9-mile) radius of the fireworks plant. They implemented measures to maintain moisture in the area to prevent additional accidents during the rescue operations.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged efforts to locate those still missing and to rescue the injured. State media reported that Xi has also called for an investigation into the incident to hold those responsible accountable.

Liuyang is known for its fireworks production and is reported to be the largest fireworks manufacturing city in the world.

Explosions at fireworks factories and shops in China have occurred before, often resulting in fatalities. In February, a blast at a fireworks shop in Hubei province killed 12 people.
