Mumbai, April 28: A new case of cyber fraud has emerged in the Dahisar area of Mumbai, where two individuals were arrested for scamming shopkeepers using a mobile app. This incident serves as a crucial warning for the public to remain vigilant amid the rising trend of digital payments.
According to Dahisar police, the suspects used a fake mobile app to pose as users of digital payment platforms like “PhonePe.” They convinced shopkeepers that they had transferred money, while no actual transaction took place.
The incident occurred on April 23, 2026, around 4:30 PM, when two young men approached a pan shop in Dahisar East. They claimed they would transfer ₹4,000 and assured the shopkeeper that payment would be made immediately via the mobile app. The fraudsters scanned a QR code and displayed a fake transaction on their mobile, showing the shopkeeper a fabricated message indicating a payment of ₹3,000 followed by ₹1,000.
Subsequently, with the help of an accomplice, they managed to take ₹4,000 in cash from the shopkeeper. However, when no payment notification arrived on the shopkeeper’s phone shortly after, he grew suspicious. He requested to see the transaction history, prompting the suspects to flee the scene.
The shopkeeper quickly informed the police, who acted swiftly to pursue and apprehend the culprits. A case has been registered at Dahisar police station under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the IT Act.
Authorities stated that the suspects were targeting multiple shopkeepers in a similar manner. Interrogations are ongoing to determine how many others may have fallen victim to their scheme.
The police have urged the public, especially small business owners, to verify that funds have been credited to their bank accounts before accepting any digital payments. Relying solely on screenshots or messages can lead to falling prey to such fraudulent activities, which are on the rise.
