Deoghar, March 3: Police in Deoghar district of Jharkhand have dismantled a gang of cybercriminals operating a fake customer care call center hidden in the forests. In a special operation conducted on Tuesday, authorities arrested 11 suspects.
According to police, these individuals were defrauding people across the country by posting fake numbers online. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team from the Cyber Police Station and Pathraoul Police Station raided a wooded area near Sarhaita village in the Pathraoul region. There, they discovered the alleged operation of a fraudulent customer care service using mobile phones and SIM cards.
The arrested individuals include Chandan Kumar, Rahul Kumar Das, Kundan Kumar, Diwakar Mahra, Jabbar Ansari, Deepak Kumar Mandal, Prince Kumar Mandal, Neeraj Kumar Das, Sanjay Kumar Das, Rohit Kumar Yadav, and another Rahul Kumar Das.
During the search, police seized 11 mobile phones, 12 SIM cards, and cash amounting to ₹1.01 lakh. The cash was found in the possession of Neeraj Kumar Das. Preliminary investigations suggest that this amount may be linked to recent cyber fraud activities.
Interrogations revealed that the suspects were uploading their fake numbers instead of the official customer care numbers of various companies and digital payment platforms on Google searches. When customers called these numbers for assistance, they were tricked into providing bank account details, OTPs, or other confidential information. Additionally, they posed as representatives of PhonePe and Paytm, luring victims with promises of rewards or cashbacks.
Police have filed cases against all the accused under cyber fraud-related sections and have sent them into judicial custody. Officials stated that investigations are ongoing to identify other members of the gang and their network.
