Croatia Coach Confident in Luka Modrics Recovery Ahead of World Cup

Zagreb, April 28: Croatia’s head coach Zlatko Dalic expressed optimism about captain Luka Modric’s timely recovery for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026. The experienced midfielder recently underwent surgery for a facial injury.

Dalic stated, “I have spoken with Modric, and I wish him a successful surgery and a swift recovery. I am confident he will do everything possible to be ready for the World Cup. We will provide him with full support, and I believe everything will go according to plan. As our captain, I trust he will lead us again in a major tournament this summer.”

Modric sustained a serious facial injury during the AC Milan versus Juventus match on Sunday, necessitating surgery. The 40-year-old midfielder has been a key player for AC Milan this season. He suffered the injury while challenging Manuel Locatelli for an aerial ball at San Siro Stadium.

The incident occurred late in the match, forcing Modric to leave the field with about 10 minutes remaining. Despite clearly being in pain, he showed his commitment to the team by standing near the touchline until the match concluded.

Subsequent medical tests revealed a fracture in his left cheekbone, leading to immediate surgery. Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and Modric is now focused on recovery and rehabilitation.

Croatia will participate in the FIFA World Cup for the fourth consecutive time. In the group stage, the team will face England, Panama, and Ghana. The 2018 runners-up will kick off their campaign against England on June 17. Croatia reached the finals in 2018 and secured third place in the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar.

The team has a strong record of reaching the semifinals, and this is expected to be Modric’s last World Cup.
