With these goals, Ronaldo surpassed Guatemala’s former international Carlos Ruiz (39 goals), taking his tally to 41 goals in World Cup qualifying matches.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored his first goal in the 22nd minute, converting a precise cross from Nelson Semedo to level the score. He then struck again before halftime, finishing off a pass from Nuno Mendes to give Portugal a 2–1 lead.
