CPI(M) Condemns Arrest of Youth and Student Protesters at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condemned the detention of youth and student protesters who gathered at Jantar Mantar. They were demanding the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who has been accused of turning the Election Commission into a “back office” for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In a statement, the CPI(M) expressed outrage over the arrests of hundreds of young people who assembled to voice their concerns. The Delhi Police, operating under direct orders from the central government, transformed the city into a fortress, detaining anyone attempting to approach Jantar Mantar. The party criticized these actions as an attempt to limit the democratic right to protest enshrined in the Constitution.

Despite these restrictions, hundreds of youth, led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and other organizations, gathered at the site, confronting police barricades and violence. Reports indicate that the police used excessive force, resulting in injuries among the protesters. It took the authorities over two hours to detain all DYFI and SFI activists, highlighting the resilience of the youth in their protest.

CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby and senior leader Brinda Karat were among those detained, along with key figures from the DYFI and SFI, including Himaghnaraj Bhattacharya and A.A. Rahim.

The CPI(M) criticized the BJP-led central government for severely restricting democratic rights, emphasizing that denying permission for protests at Jantar Mantar reflects the government’s increasing intolerance. The party praised the youth and students who defied the restrictions to participate in the demonstration.

The movement to protect democracy and ensure the impartiality of institutions like the Election Commission will continue. The CPI(M) calls on the public to join in large numbers to strengthen this ongoing struggle. They demand the immediate removal of the Chief Election Commissioner, a halt to the SIR (Special Investigation Report), and the release of all detained protesters.
