New Delhi, August 18: A significant controversy has emerged in Delhi following the murder of an MCD sanitation worker. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Delhi Police are now at odds. AAP legislator Kuldeep Kumar, who has been advocating for justice for the victim’s family, was taken into custody, prompting serious allegations from AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal against the central government and the Delhi Police.
Kejriwal accused the Delhi Police of forcibly taking Kuldeep Kumar from his home. He also claimed that the police destroyed the CCTV cameras and seized the digital video recorder (DVR) from the premises.
On Tuesday, Kejriwal took to social media platform ‘X’ to directly question the Prime Minister. He wrote, “If a legislator can be taken away from his home without any information or reason, where can the common man go in this country? This nation will not tolerate such tyranny.”
AAP leader Sanjeev Jha also posted on ‘X’, stating, “At 4 AM, plainclothes individuals came and took Kuldeep Kumar away. They broke the cameras in the house and took the DVR. It is now afternoon, and we still do not know where Kuldeep Kumar is.”
Jha mentioned that he had been standing outside the office of the DCP Eastern Range for two and a half hours. He expressed frustration, saying, “I am trying to meet and speak with the DCP, but there has been no response. My direct question to the Delhi Police Commissioner is – has it now become a crime to raise a voice for justice for Dalits? Will a sitting legislator who speaks against murder be intimidated into silence?”
He added, “This tyranny is unacceptable. Voices cannot be suppressed through police uniforms and batons.”
The controversy began after the murder of MCD sanitation worker Anil Kumar in the Kalyanpuri area of Delhi on Sunday morning while he was on duty. The 24-year-old was stabbed to death, with CCTV footage showing the assailant attacking the worker. The police arrested the suspect the following day, but his identity has not yet been disclosed.
In the wake of this murder, thousands of sanitation workers have been protesting for the past two days. Their primary demands include justice for the deceased’s family and a compensation of 1 crore rupees.
Saurabh Bhardwaj, the Delhi state president of AAP, has leveled serious accusations against the Delhi Police. He claims that the police are pressuring the victim’s family to conduct the last rites against their wishes.
According to AAP, the family seeks justice and appropriate compensation for the murder, but the police are allegedly coercing them into proceeding with the last rites. The party asserts that the police took the body from the hospital to the family’s home and then pressured relatives to conduct the funeral.
AAP has also claimed that early in the morning, police took some family members with them. The party questioned the urgency of the last rites without the family’s consent.
Bhardwaj stated that the deceased came from a poor Dalit family. He emphasized that the government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and the police should listen to the family’s demands rather than exert pressure. He insisted that the family should decide when and how the last rites will be conducted.
The family has echoed that the police have repeatedly urged them to complete the last rites, but they first want justice and clear answers from the Delhi government regarding their demands.
Currently, there has been no official statement from the police regarding Kuldeep Kumar’s situation or the allegations of CCTV and DVR destruction. Meanwhile, the investigation into the sanitation worker’s murder is ongoing, and protests continue.
