Controversial 2021 Photo Resurfaces Amid Political Tensions in West Bengal
A 2021 photo of Mamata Banerjee in a wheelchair reignites political debate and raises questions about medical ethics and privacy.

New Delhi, October 7 (Daily Kiran) : The political rivalry between West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and former CM Mamata Banerjee has taken a new turn with the resurfacing of a photo from 2021. This image, which features Banerjee in a wheelchair during her election campaign, has sparked a wave of memes and discussions centered around the slogan “Khela Hobe.”
The photo dates back to March 2021, when Banerjee suffered an injury to her left leg while campaigning in Nandigram. Despite her injury, she continued her campaign by appearing in a wheelchair with her leg in a cast, creating one of the most iconic images of that election season.
At the time, this campaign strategy ignited fierce political debates. Supporters claimed it was evidence of a dangerous attack on a political leader, while critics raised doubts about the authenticity of her injury.
Critics suggested that her injury was caused by colliding with an open door, hitting a post. Nevertheless, her wheelchair-bound campaign image proved to be politically impactful and has since become a part of Bengal’s electoral folklore.
Now, five years later, the controversy has evolved beyond political drama, delving into medical ethics and issues of truthfulness. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has publicly referenced medical documents related to Banerjee’s 2021 treatment, alleging that there is no evidence of a fracture or dislocation in the records.
In response, Banerjee has issued a legal notice to the hospital and officials involved in her treatment, questioning how her supposedly confidential medical records were made public. The notice raises concerns about the legal authority under which such records were disclosed and whether any court order or legal process permitted their release.
While the question of whether a fracture actually occurred remains unanswered, the situation has sparked a broader debate about the public discussion of a patient’s medical records, especially those of a public figure, without their consent.
Critics argue that concerns over patient privacy and data protection may be an attempt to suppress the issue. However, Banerjee’s camp contends that the public disclosure of the records cannot be justified.
This ongoing debate has also put the hospital that treated Banerjee in a precarious position. Initially viewed as a facility providing care to an injured patient, it now faces scrutiny over whether it adequately protected sensitive medical information related to that patient.
