Construction of Gujarats First Bullet Train Power Substation Nears Completion

The first traction substation for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in Bilimora is in its final construction phase.

Bilimora, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : The construction of the first traction substation for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in Bilimora, Gujarat, has reached its final stages. This substation is part of a network of 14 traction substations proposed for the 508-kilometer high-speed rail corridor.

Spanning approximately 18,000 square meters, the substation is undergoing rapid installation, testing, and commissioning of its equipment. The installation of control panels, changeover switches, transformers, and circuit breakers has been completed. Additionally, all gantry towers and beams have been constructed.

To ensure a continuous power supply for trains along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, a total of 14 traction substations are being established. These substations will draw power from the grid, convert it to the necessary voltage, and supply it to the traction power system that operates the trains.

Of the 14 substations, five are being built in Maharashtra at locations including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, and Thane depot. The remaining nine are located in Gujarat, with sites in Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mehmedabad, Ahmedabad, and the Sabarmati depot.

In Gujarat, these traction substations will receive electricity from the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited’s (GETCO) 220 kV Ambetha grid substation. The power will then be delivered to overhead equipment (OHE) installed on viaducts through a 2×25 kV traction power supply system.

This system will transmit electricity to overhead wires, providing energy to the trains via their pantographs. A centralized control center will monitor the entire traction power network in real time, ensuring consistent power supply throughout the corridor.

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail corridor is India’s first bullet train project, linking Maharashtra and Gujarat. The 14 traction substations being constructed are crucial components of its electrical infrastructure, playing a vital role in facilitating smooth operations of bullet trains along the route.
