Washington, March 24: During his visit to the Sri Lakshmi Temple in Massachusetts, Congressman Jim McGovern engaged with community members. This visit, which took place on March 21, was described by organizers as both symbolic and historic.
At the temple, McGovern met with locals to discuss vital issues such as civic engagement, religious inclusion, and public policies. This meeting is seen as part of his efforts to connect with diverse communities in his state and enhance mutual understanding.
The event was organized by Americans 4 Hindus. Dr. Lakshmi Thalanki, president of the Massachusetts chapter, stated that this historic visit showcases the strength and vibrancy of the Hindu-American community, marking a significant step towards building bridges between various cultures and religions.
Ramesh Vishwanath Kapoor, president of the US-India Security Council, emphasized the need to strengthen US-India relations, noting that McGovern has long supported the Indian-American community. He also called for unity within the community.
During the event, McGovern honored renowned tabla player and music teacher Gaurishankar Chandrashekar for his 25 years of contribution. His students expressed their joy and celebrated this recognition.
Dr. Thalanki highlighted some key principles of Hinduism. She referenced “Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha Vadanti,” stating that truth is one but understood in various ways. She explained that Hinduism teaches acceptance rather than division based on differing views.
She also mentioned the principle of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which promotes mutual respect and harmony on a global scale.
During the temple visit, McGovern was presented with a statue of Goddess Lakshmi in honor of Navratri. Additionally, temple priests and leaders gifted him a coin depicting Lord Ganesha.
Temple representatives noted that this visit reflects the spirit of “Atithi Devo Bhava,” which signifies respect and honor towards guests in Indian culture.
Pramit Makode highlighted the contributions of the Indian-American community, describing it as educated and actively engaged in society. Ram Gupta shared Hindu principles such as Dharma and Karma, emphasizing their focus on the welfare of humanity.
The event also saw participation from various community members, volunteers, cultural activists, and local political aspirants, showcasing the growing involvement of the Indian-American community.
