New Delhi, September 1: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement of a 7.8% GDP growth as a significant achievement, the Congress party has sharply criticized the central government. Congress MP Pawan Khera questioned the GDP figures, stating that an increase in economic growth does not resolve the issues faced by the common people, farmers, and youth. He demanded answers from the government regarding inflation, employment, agriculture, and the manufacturing sector.
In an interview, Khera remarked that the government is touting its achievements based on a single quarter’s data. He emphasized the need to clarify how different segments of society have benefited from this growth. He raised concerns about what advantages farmers have gained from this economic increase and whether there is any visible positive impact on the agricultural sector. Khera pointed out that with a large youth population, employment remains the biggest challenge. He urged the government to explain how the GDP growth has addressed the issues faced by young people. He also questioned whether fuel prices have decreased and if inflation has provided any relief to the general public.
The Congress MP further questioned why, if the economy is growing rapidly, a significant number of people still rely on free rations. He highlighted the rising costs of essential items like milk and sugar, stating that the financial pressure on ordinary families is increasing. Regarding the manufacturing sector, Khera criticized the government, stating that alongside GDP figures, it is essential to assess the actual improvements in manufacturing and the number of job opportunities created.
Khera also responded to the Prime Minister’s claim that some individuals are fostering a pessimistic atmosphere and spreading “echoes of lies.” He stated that various groups in the country are experiencing problems, and both farmers and ordinary families are feeling economic pressure. He sarcastically commented on the Prime Minister’s advice against buying gold, hosting lavish weddings, and traveling abroad.
He insisted that the government should address the real issues faced by the public. It is not enough to simply state that the country should not be disheartened; solutions to inflation and employment issues must also be provided.
Regarding Modi’s statement on war and humanity in the context of Russia and Iran, Khera questioned how seriously India’s foreign policy and the government’s role in international conflicts are taken. He alleged that the government has adopted stances in certain international conflicts that undermine its moral authority to advise other nations on stopping wars. He urged that India should clarify its diplomatic role and stance, especially in a world rife with conflict.
Khera criticized the government for rising inflation, citing a ₹9 increase per liter for milk in Mumbai and a ₹3 increase per kilogram for CNG in Delhi. He quipped that if GDP is so robust, the government should print GDP figures on every milk packet, so consumers can see the economy’s progress alongside rising prices. He concluded that the government should not only boast about GDP growth figures but also provide answers regarding the real impact of economic development on inflation, employment, agriculture, and the income of the common man. Economic growth will only be meaningful when its benefits reach every segment of society.
