Beijing, April 17: The China Media Group (CMG) has launched a Film Culture Carnival in Ningbo, located in southeastern China’s Zhejiang province. A recent survey conducted by the China Global Television Network (CGTN) and the New Era International Communication Research Institute of Renmin University of China revealed that Chinese cinema has become a significant medium for understanding China globally. The survey included 12,302 participants from 41 countries.
In recent years, films produced in China have showcased a remarkable diversity in both themes and styles. Genres such as comedy, martial arts, realistic cinema, animation, and espionage have attracted various audience segments. These films not only entertain but also offer glimpses into both traditional and modern China.
When asked about the mediums for understanding Chinese culture, “Chinese films and television productions” ranked second, following “social media.” Additionally, “watching Chinese films and programs” was the third most popular cultural experience, coming after “traveling to China” and “tasting Chinese cuisine.”
Moreover, 81.6% of respondents believe that the soft power of Chinese culture and its global influence are rapidly increasing. 78.6% found Chinese culture to be highly attractive. 82.2% stated that understanding traditional Chinese culture aids in better comprehending China, while 77% emphasized the importance of being familiar with popular culture. Furthermore, 64.9% positively assessed the role of Chinese films and television productions in preserving and innovating traditional culture.
According to statistics, as of April 14, China’s total box office revenue for 2026 (including pre-sales) has surpassed 12.5 billion yuan. The cultural elements showcased in these films are quickly gaining popularity among foreign audiences. Additionally, Chinese cinema plays a crucial role in promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.
The survey results also indicate that China’s proposed global civilization initiative is receiving widespread international support. 70.1% of participants believe that China plays a significant role in promoting dialogue and mutual enrichment among civilizations. 70.6% of respondents think that Chinese civilization presents new ideas for global governance, while 70.3% believe that Chinese civilization and values can provide useful solutions for developing countries and global governance.
This survey was conducted through an online sample database, with participants selected based on age and gender balance according to the census of various countries. It included representatives from both developed nations and the Global South.
