
Mumbai, April 17: A tragic incident occurred on Friday in Valparai, Tamil Nadu, involving a group of tourists from Malappuram, Kerala. The accident resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and left several others injured.
The victims were part of a group of teachers and their families from Perinthalmanna, who had embarked on a holiday trip.
According to initial reports, the mini traveler van they were traveling in crashed at the 13th hairpin bend on the Pollachi-Valparai Ghat Road. The vehicle, coming from Thrissur, lost control, collided with the guardrail, and plunged rapidly down towards the eighth hairpin bend.
The impact was so severe that the van was completely wrecked. There were 12 teachers and a driver on board, including staff and family members from the GLP School located in Pang, Malappuram.
Injured passengers have been admitted to a government hospital in Pollachi, with some reported to be in critical condition. A group of relatives and friends of the victims has already departed for Coimbatore, where the injured and the deceased are being taken.
The Pollachi-Valparai route is notorious for its rough terrain and over 40 sharp turns, making it a challenging drive for motorists.
This accident, which occurred around Friday evening, has sent shockwaves through Malappuram district in Kerala.
Kerala’s police chief, Revda Chandrasekhar, stated that he is in constant contact with his counterpart in Tamil Nadu. He assured that all possible assistance is being provided to the victims and their families, and officials are coordinating to ensure timely medical care and further support.
Rescue and investigation efforts are ongoing, and further information is awaited.
