Beijing, August 7: The South-to-North Water Diversion Corporation has reported that as of Friday, the project has successfully transferred a total of 80 billion cubic meters of water to northern regions. This initiative has benefited approximately 118 million people in Henan, Hebei, Tianjin, and Beijing.
Additionally, the project has provided essential water resources for the economic and social development of 243 counties across 27 medium and large cities located along the waterway.
Over its nearly 12 years of operation, the middle route of the project has played a crucial role in improving the distribution of water resources in China, ensuring drinking water security for its citizens, restoring the ecosystems of rivers and lakes, and promoting economic growth between northern and southern regions. This has significantly bolstered China’s national water security.
Since the project’s inception, the capacity for water supply has steadily increased, expanding the areas that benefit from it and transforming water usage methods. Approximately 80% of the water in Beijing’s central urban area now relies on supplies from the south. Meanwhile, Tianjin’s main urban area utilizes nearly all its water from this project. In Hebei, around 70% of the province’s population benefits from this initiative.
Efforts to integrate urban and rural water supply systems in the receiving areas have also advanced, leading to significant improvements in providing clean drinking water to rural communities.
Moreover, the middle route project has enhanced the availability and capacity of water resources in the relevant areas. This has been instrumental in addressing drought conditions, strengthening agricultural irrigation systems, and ensuring food security. It has also opened new possibilities for urban development and the improvement of industrial infrastructure.
