Beijing, March 6: The annual session of China’s National People’s Congress (NPC) commenced on Thursday morning at the Great Hall of the People in the capital, Beijing. Over 2,700 representatives from across the country are participating in this eight-day event.
The representatives will review the government work report, examine the draft of the 15th Five-Year Plan for national economic and social development (2026-2030), and discuss drafts on environmental legislation, ethnic unity, and the promotion of progress, as well as the National Development Planning Law. Additionally, reports from the Supreme People’s Court and the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the 2026 national economic and social development plan, and drafts of both central and local budgets will also be evaluated.
It is noteworthy that the NPC is China’s largest legislative body, with a five-year term. It holds an annual session where significant policies, laws, and key appointments are discussed and decided. This body represents the highest form of state power exercised by the Chinese people and is a crucial symbol of socialist democratic politics.
This year marks the fourth session of the 14th NPC. The annual sessions of the NPC and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which take place at the beginning of March, are collectively referred to as the “Two Sessions.” These sessions are viewed as a central display of the superiority of China’s political system.
The year 2026 is the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan for national economic and social development. The NPC will review the draft of this plan, while CPPCC members will engage in extensive discussions to shape the country’s development framework.
