New Delhi: Silver prices in China have surged significantly faster than in other international markets, with the price difference reaching nearly 16 dollars per ounce. While global silver prices hover around 109 dollars per ounce, silver in China is trading close to 125 dollars per ounce.
Demand Drives Price Difference
The primary reason behind the disparity in silver prices between China and the rest of the world is the strong demand in the Chinese market. China accounts for over 65 percent of the world’s silver supply consumption. Silver is extensively bought both in the spot and futures markets in China. As global silver supplies face shortages, demand for silver investment in China has risen sharply compared to earlier periods.
Policy Changes Impacting Silver Exports
Since the beginning of January, China has revised its silver export policy. Only companies licensed by the government are permitted to export silver now. This regulatory change adds to the pressure on international silver markets, where prices have shown a remarkable surge recently.
Market Performance of Silver and Gold
On the COMEX exchange, silver prices rose by nearly 8 percent on Monday, reaching around 109 dollars per ounce. Over the last month, silver prices have increased by approximately 42 percent. In the past three months, silver has delivered returns of 127 percent, six months 182 percent, and over the last year, it has given more than 250 percent returns to investors.
Gold has also performed strongly alongside silver. COMEX gold prices are near 5,125 dollars per ounce. In the last month, gold has provided a 13 percent return, 23 percent over three months, 49 percent over six months, and an impressive 84.52 percent return over the past year.
