Beijing, August 11: A recent article by CNBC highlights that Chinese AI companies are narrowing the performance gap with leading U.S. laboratories and, in some areas, even surpassing them.
Currently, the world’s top-performing open-source models—downloadable, modifiable, and freely deployable—are all originating from China. Moreover, many experts assert that China’s robotics technology is also leading on a global scale.
The report argues that Chinese AI models have become more cost-effective and competitive compared to their American counterparts. Daniel Remler, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security’s Technology and National Security Program, stated, “Based on current trends, it seems that Chinese AI will become the default option for developing countries.”
The report cites Keegan McBride, director of technology policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, who noted, “China has significant advantages in many areas where AI will be utilized, including robotics, autonomous vehicles, and national governance.” He further added, “In the long term, if manufacturing, robotics, automated scientific infrastructure, and AI-driven national action become decisive measures for deriving value from AI, China will be in a highly advantageous position.”
