Raipur/Bijapur, 19 December: A fierce gunbattle took place on Friday between security forces and Maoist cadres in the dense hills of Bhairamgarh-Indravati area in Bijapur district, Chhattisgarh.

A team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) from Bijapur launched an anti-Naxal operation following specific intelligence about the presence of armed Maoist cadres in the area, which led to the exchange of fire.

Intermittent firing has been reported since morning, and police officials have confirmed the ongoing encounter. Additional security personnel have been deployed, and the area has been cordoned off. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Police officials stated that the DRG team is deep inside the forest and the operation is still underway. The area has been surrounded, but detailed information about any casualties will be available only after the search operation concludes. Officials emphasised caution due to the sensitivity of the location.

Bijapur remains a priority zone for anti-Naxal operations. In recent years, it has witnessed the highest number of Maoists neutralised.

Just weeks ago, security forces eliminated several Maoists in multiple encounters across the Bastar division, pushing the total number of Maoists killed in the state during 2025 to over 280.

Officials believe that the influence of Maoists is weakening, aligning with the central government’s target to eliminate left-wing extremism by March 2026.

According to official data, 144 Maoists were neutralised in Bijapur district alone in 2025. Over 500 arrests and 560 surrenders were also recorded.

Coordinated efforts between state police, DRG, CRPF Cobra units, and central forces have significantly weakened Maoist networks, reduced the number of affected districts, and brought the government closer to its goal of a Naxal-free India by March 2026.

This progress reflects strategic forward deployments, improved intelligence, and an increase in surrenders due to growing disenchantment within Maoist ranks.
