N’Djamena, May 8: Chad has declared a 20-day state of emergency in the Lake Province following attacks by Boko Haram militants. These assaults targeted military personnel.
According to a statement released by the country’s military late Thursday, the emergency measures began at midnight on May 7 and will last until midnight on May 27.
The Xinhua news agency reported that officials and security forces have been instructed to take “all necessary steps” to ensure the safety of citizens and their property during this period.
The statement also warned that violations of the emergency regulations would result in penalties under the law. It noted that all measures would automatically cease once the state of emergency concludes.
On Monday, Boko Haram’s attack resulted in the deaths of 23 Chadian soldiers and left 26 others injured. This incident occurred at a military base on the island of Baraka Tolorom in the Lake Chad region.
President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno expressed his condolences via social media, stating that he visited the injured soldiers in the hospital and wished them a swift recovery.
