Kolkata, May 12: The investigation into the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). A seven-member team, led by a DIG-ranked officer, will conduct the inquiry.
The CBI will take over the investigation from the Kolkata Police on Tuesday. The police had recommended that the case be transferred to the CBI for further investigation.
Chandranath Rath was shot dead late on May 6. After being shot, he was rushed to Vivacity Hospital, where he was declared dead. The Director General of Police (DGP) visited the hospital late Thursday night.
The DGP stated that the vehicle used in the murder had a fake license plate. Shell casings and some cartridges were recovered from the crime scene. A detailed investigation is ongoing, but further information cannot be disclosed at this time.
According to police sources, eyewitnesses initially believed that Rath’s car was being followed by a four-wheeler for a long time. When his vehicle reached the Dohariya turn in Madhyagram, the pursuing car overtook Rath’s vehicle and blocked the way, allowing the assailants to open fire. However, later investigations revealed that Rath’s vehicle was actually being followed by a motorcycle.
Police sources indicated that when Rath’s car reached the Dohariya turn, a four-wheeler blocked the road, and a motorcyclist began firing. Police officials assert that the precision with which the attack was executed indicates that it was a premeditated murder involving professional shooters.
West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya claimed that Rath’s murder was a result of a conspiracy orchestrated by TMC leadership. He suggested that this plot was devised in response to the significant defeat in the recent West Bengal assembly elections.
