Call for Railway Overbridge at Peringadi Level Crossing in Kannur

MP V. Shivadasan urges swift approval for a railway overbridge at Peringadi to ease traffic woes in Kannur district.

Kannur, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : Dr. V. Shivadasan, a Rajya Sabha member from Kerala, has formally requested the central government to expedite the construction of a railway overbridge (ROB) at level crossing number 223 near Peringadi in Kannur district. The MP highlighted that the frequent traffic jams at this crossing cause significant daily inconvenience for thousands of commuters.

In a letter addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Dr. Shivadasan emphasized the urgency of approving this project. He noted that the level crossing is situated on the New Mahe-Chokli road, a vital route connecting Kerala with the Union Territory of Puducherry’s Mahe region.

The MP pointed out that the traffic pressure on this road has intensified since the commencement of the Mahe-Muzhappilangad bypass on National Highway 66, exacerbating the congestion issues at the railway crossing.

Dr. Shivadasan explained that the crossing frequently closes during train movements, forcing local residents, travelers, and other motorists to wait for extended periods. This not only disrupts traffic flow but also hinders the movement of ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

He reiterated that the local community has long advocated for the construction of a railway overbridge at this site to ensure safer and more convenient passage for everyone.

The MP urged the Railway Minister to initiate the necessary technical studies and administrative processes for the ROB construction at Peringadi, aiming to find a lasting solution to this longstanding problem. He concluded that the completion of this project would significantly improve traffic conditions in the area, providing relief to the public from daily inconveniences.
