Sagar, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident in Sagar district of Madhya Pradesh has resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals due to suspected consumption of contaminated alcohol. An FIR has been lodged against 20 suspects at the Banda police station, citing multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Madhya Pradesh Excise Act.
Authorities have arrested 10 of the named suspects as they work to trace the source and supply chain of the illicit alcohol. The incident has affected several villages, including Nauraz, Gugra Khurd, Dalpatpur, Paatan, Chouka, Chhapri, and Bamura Bhera.
Reports indicate that numerous villagers fell ill after consuming the toxic substance, leading to their admission to Banda Hospital, Bundelkhand Medical College (BMC) in Sagar, and the district hospital. One critically ill patient was airlifted to Bhopal for advanced treatment.
Forensic and chemical samples of the suspected alcohol, along with viscera from the deceased, have been sent for testing to determine the exact cause of death. In response to the severity of the situation, police and district administration have intensified their efforts.
Sagar Superintendent of Police Anurag Sujania has formed special teams that have conducted multiple raids in the area. Opposition leader Umang Singhar has called for financial assistance of 50 lakh rupees for the victims’ families and strict action against those responsible.
In a related development, Gwalior’s Excise Commissioner Deepak Saxena confirmed the suspension of several officials, including the Assistant Excise Commissioner of Sagar, Kirti Dubey, and District Excise Officer Dilip Khandate. Additionally, the in-charge of Gugra police station, Puran Ladiya, and Banda police station chief Rajendra Singh Kushwaha have also been suspended.
Deputy Chief Minister and district in-charge minister Rajendra Shukla visited Sagar and met with patients receiving treatment at BMC and the district hospital. He instructed doctors to ensure proper care for the patients and assured the media that a comprehensive review of the incident would take place, promising a thorough and impartial investigation.
The administration has heightened surveillance in the affected areas and urged residents to avoid consuming any illegal or suspicious alcohol. Citizens are also encouraged to report any information regarding the manufacture or sale of illicit liquor to the police immediately.
