The Rise and Fall of Avinash Wadhawan: A Bollywood Stars Journey
Avinash Wadhawan, once a rising Bollywood star, faced setbacks that led to his fall from fame. Discover his journey in the film industry.

Mumbai, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : Avinash Wadhawan was once seen as the next big star in Bollywood during the 1990s, a time when romance and action were defining the industry. Known for his roles in hits like “Junoon” and “Geet,” Wadhawan had a promising start with a queue of films lined up for him. Many projects that later propelled stars like Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan, and Akshay Kumar were initially considered for him. However, a series of flops and poor decisions led to his near disappearance from the big screen. Today, he makes appearances on television shows and OTT platforms.
Born on November 2, 1968, in Mumbai, Wadhawan excelled academically and received numerous scholarships throughout his college years. He studied engineering in Delhi and was accepted into IIM Lucknow for his MBA. However, he chose to attend the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute in Mumbai, where his life took an unexpected turn.
While studying, a prominent fashion designer noticed Wadhawan and offered him a modeling contract. This opportunity changed his trajectory. In just one year, he participated in 67 advertisements and fashion shows, becoming so engrossed in modeling that he eventually dropped out after two semesters. By the late 1980s, he began his foray into Bollywood, gaining significant recognition with the 1991 film “I Milan Ki Raat,” which became a box office hit and catapulted him to stardom.
Riding on this success, he signed nearly 17 to 18 films in the following four to five years, including “Balma,” “Junoon,” “Dil Ki Baazi,” “Geet,” and “Papi Gudiya.” At one point, he was considered a reliable hero, competing with actors who now dominate Bollywood.
In 1990, at the peak of his career, Wadhawan married and became a father at a young age. Unfortunately, personal issues began to affect his professional life. He later admitted that he allowed his personal problems to overshadow his career. During this tumultuous period, he left India for an extended time, distancing himself from the industry. By the time he returned, Bollywood had transformed dramatically.
Wadhawan’s first marriage ended in divorce in 2000. His former wife, Chhaya Parekh, a model and renowned painter, is now known as Chhaya Smriti Mirani. He remarried in 2003.
In a recent interview, Wadhawan recounted, “I went abroad for a film shoot and never returned. This long-distance from Mumbai resulted in a severed connection with filmmakers and directors.” He revealed that he turned down or missed out on several significant films that later became milestones for other stars. For instance, the blockbuster “Phool Aur Kaante” was initially offered to him, as was a role in “Deewana,” which eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan. Additionally, he missed an opportunity to meet Yash Chopra for “Yeh Dillagi” due to tardiness, a role that went to Saif Ali Khan. During 1991 and 1992, he was a top choice for many directors, often ahead of Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan, and Akshay Kumar in terms of work opportunities.
