Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, famous for his blockbuster movies and exceptional fitness, recently left his fans stunned with a shocking revelation on Kapil Sharma’s show. The actor disclosed that he has been battling serious neurological conditions — brain aneurysm and AV malformation — prompting widespread curiosity about these lesser-known but life-threatening diseases.
To help better understand these conditions, Dr. Dhruv Chaturvedi, Neurology Expert and Associate Director at PSRI Hospital, Delhi, explains the risks, symptoms, and essential prevention tips.
What Is a Brain Aneurysm?
A brain aneurysm is like a ballooning or bulge that forms at a weak spot in a brain blood vessel. Over time, this bulge can rupture, causing bleeding in the brain (known as subarachnoid hemorrhage).
This is a dangerous condition — often called a “silent killer” — because it can occur without warning. Immediate medical attention is crucial when it ruptures.
What Is AV Malformation?
Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a congenital defect (present at birth), in which an abnormal tangle of blood vessels forms between arteries (which carry blood to the brain) and veins (which carry it away). This tangled network disrupts normal blood flow, greatly increasing the risk of bleeding in the brain.
Symptoms may include:
Headache
Seizures
Weakness or numbness in parts of the body
In some cases, AVM remains undetected until it triggers sudden brain bleeding.
Symptoms to Watch Out For — Stay Alert!
Both brain aneurysms and AVMs can be asymptomatic — until a serious complication occurs. However, some warning signs include:
Sudden, severe headache
Blurred vision
Vomiting
Difficulty speaking or walking
Numbness in any part of the body
Seizures
If you or someone you know experiences any of these symptoms, immediate consultation with a neurologist is essential. The good news: with timely diagnosis, modern treatments like endovascular coiling, surgical clipping, or radiosurgery can help manage these conditions effectively.
Prevention Is Key — Simple Lifestyle Tips
Preventing such life-threatening conditions involves proactive healthcare:
✅ Regular health checkups — Especially important for those with high blood pressure or a family history of neurological diseases.
✅ Stress management — Keep stress levels low through relaxation techniques.
✅ Avoid addiction — Stay away from smoking and excessive alcohol.
✅ Adopt a healthy lifestyle — Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get quality sleep.
A Lesson from Salman Khan
Salman Khan’s openness about his health struggles reminds us all — never take health for granted. With early detection and proper medical care, we can fight even the most serious illnesses.
As they say: if there is health, there is everything!
