Dhaka, February 13: Tarique Rahman, the chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has declared that his party is poised for a “historic victory” in the national parliamentary elections. This statement was reported by local media on Friday.
According to a report by Xinhua News Agency, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, the senior joint secretary of the BNP, congratulated the citizens of Bangladesh in a separate statement. He noted that the party has secured a majority of seats in the elections, marking a significant achievement.
Initial counting reports from local media indicate that the BNP appears to be winning more than half of the seats across various constituencies. The elections were held on Thursday.
However, reports of irregularities, voter bribery, and incidents of violence have emerged from several locations during the elections. The law and order situation was reportedly poor in many areas during the 13th parliamentary elections in Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, a leader from the Jamaat-e-Islami, named Zainal Abedin, was detained for allegedly distributing money during the voting process. This incident occurred in the Gorai Union of the Mirzapur sub-district in Tangail district.
Tarique Aziz, the assistant commissioner (land) and magistrate of the mobile court, confirmed the incident. The accused was fined 3,000 Bangladeshi Taka.
Additionally, there have been reports of violence breaking out at several polling centers, including the death of a political leader during the voting.
As voting commenced in the morning, tensions arose in multiple locations. These events indicate that the law and order situation in Bangladesh remains fragile, presenting serious challenges to security measures.
