Leipzig, March 17: BMW has initiated the testing of humanoid robots at its iFACTORY plant in Leipzig, Germany. This marks a significant advancement in AI-driven manufacturing. The initiative is part of BMW’s strategy to incorporate advanced robotics and artificial intelligence into vehicle production, especially for electric vehicles. One of the robots under evaluation is named AEON, developed by Zurich-based Hexagon Robotics.
AEON stands approximately 1.65 meters tall and weighs around 60 kilograms. Unlike traditional robots, it moves on wheels, allowing for swift and efficient navigation across the factory floor. BMW employs AEON to assist with various tasks, including battery assembly, screw tightening, and handling components for high-voltage electric vehicle batteries. These tasks are often repetitive or physically demanding, where robotic assistance can enhance productivity.
Equipped with 22 sensors, including cameras and microphones, AEON can analyze its environment and avoid obstacles. It operates on NVIDIA Jetson Orin computing hardware, which processes data and powers its AI-driven motion system. BMW refers to this approach as “Physical AI,” merging digital intelligence with machines capable of interacting with the physical world.
This project follows a successful 10-month pilot test at BMW’s Spartanburg factory in the United States, where robots managed over 90,000 parts and contributed to the production of around 30,000 vehicles.
BMW intends to further test this technology, with additional trials planned soon and a larger pilot program expected to commence later this summer.
