Kolkata, April 9: A shocking incident has emerged from Haldia in East Midnapore district, West Bengal, where the body of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was discovered on Wednesday evening. This grim finding comes just 24 hours before a highly anticipated election rally addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The deceased has been identified as Mahadev Biswas. His body was found near the banks of the Haldi River in the Balughata area of Haldia, a significant industrial town in East Midnapore.
Reports indicate that his body was covered in blood and bore multiple signs of injury. The exact cause of death remains unknown, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. However, the family suspects foul play, believing it to be a case of murder.
Mahadev had been missing since Tuesday evening. His wife informed reporters that he left home to go to work and did not return. She expressed her conviction that this is a clear case of murder, noting that his neck was swollen and there were severe injuries on his limbs.
Local BJP leadership has echoed these concerns, asserting that this is a premeditated and brutal murder. A local BJP leader stated that Mahadev was an active party worker. He further claimed that this murder was orchestrated to create an atmosphere of tension in the area ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, with the first phase of voting scheduled for April 23 across all assembly seats in East Midnapore.
In contrast, local Trinamool Congress leaders have denied any political connections to the death. A local leader questioned whether the deceased had any real ties to the BJP.
The police have initiated a thorough investigation into the case.
