Guwahati, March 16: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will release its complete list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections on March 18. Voting for the assembly elections is scheduled for April 9.
Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Sarma indicated that the party would unveil all candidates in a single announcement. This suggests that the BJP has largely finalized its election strategy. He confirmed that the list of candidates would be disclosed on March 18.
Sarma is traveling to New Delhi today for crucial discussions with the BJP’s central leadership regarding the finalization of candidates for the upcoming assembly elections. He also hinted that he would file his nomination on March 20.
Before departing for New Delhi, Chief Minister Sarma visited the Durga Temple located in the outskirts of Guwahati, where he offered prayers. He sought blessings at the temple ahead of the elections. On Sunday, the Election Commission announced the dates for the assembly elections across Assam and other states.
Voting for the 126-member assembly will take place in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 4. Following the announcement of the election schedule, political activities have intensified across the state, as parties finalize their candidate selections and campaign strategies.
The ruling BJP in the state will contest the elections in alliance with its partner parties, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Sources indicate that a formula for seat-sharing among the alliance partners has been established, with the BJP likely contesting around 90 seats in the 126-member assembly. The remaining seats will be allocated to its allies, AGP and BPF.
In recent weeks, Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders have been holding several organizational meetings to assess the party’s preparations and evaluate potential candidates across various constituencies. The announcement of candidates is expected to create a significant political atmosphere. The opposition Congress has already begun releasing its list of candidates and ramping up its electoral campaign across the state.
