Chennai, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions are rising in Tamil Nadu over a shortage of government-supplied milk from the brand ‘Aavin.’ BJP leader and former Telangana Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan has taken aim at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s administration, emphasizing that while a gold ring may be a nice gift for newborns, daily nutrition is essential for families.
In a post on the social media platform X, Sundararajan stated, “A gold ring may be a good gift for newborns, but the most critical aspect is ensuring they receive necessary nutrition every day. Chief Minister, please ensure an uninterrupted supply of ‘Aavin’ milk in Tamil Nadu, especially for children and infants. There should never be a shortage of basic needs.”
The Tamil Nadu government recently announced a scheme to provide gold rings to newborns, prompting opposition parties to raise questions about priorities. Sundararajan previously criticized the government, urging, “First, focus on necessities, Chief Minister. Children need milk. We are giving away gold jewelry, but when will we address the shortage of quality milk? Today, children need good quality milk more than gold.”
She also shared statistics on milk demand and supply in Chennai, claiming, “The people of Chennai require 3 million liters of milk, but ‘Aavin’ is supplying only 1.45 million liters. The milk sells out before it reaches the public, forcing us to purchase more expensive private milk. Today, the people of Tamil Nadu are saying they need milk more than gold jewelry. Children are expressing this need without words.”
‘Aavin’ is the state government’s cooperative milk company, providing milk at the lowest prices. In recent weeks, reports have surfaced about milk shortages in Chennai and several districts, with many booths running out of milk early in the morning, compelling residents to buy pricier alternatives from private companies.
