Jalandhar, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has instructed Police Chief Gaurav Yadav to visit Lovely Professional University in Phagwara to assess the situation following violent protests by students. This directive comes in response to unverified claims related to a female student, which have sparked unrest on campus.
According to officials, Mann emphasized the need for Yadav to personally evaluate the conditions at the university and ensure a thorough investigation into the matter. This order follows two days of escalating violence, during which students reportedly damaged property and set parts of the campus ablaze.
Protesters also blocked the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway, halting traffic for over 15 hours. However, police managed to restore order on National Highway-44. In light of the unrest, university administration announced a ten-day closure and postponed examinations.
The turmoil erupted after social media allegations surfaced, suggesting that a student had been raped and subsequently committed suicide. The university has dismissed these claims as false and fabricated, while police are investigating the allegations and have filed an FIR based on statements from protesting students.
DIG Naveen Singla from the Jalandhar range reported that a Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident, and the examination of CCTV footage from hostels is underway. As of now, no names have been mentioned in the FIR.
In a statement, the university advised students to remain in their hostels or residences for their safety and to avoid engaging in any activities that could lead to further unrest.
Authorities have also launched a comprehensive investigation into the sudden disturbances at Lovely Professional University and Chitkara University, where protests began just a day earlier.
Special DGP (Law and Order) Parveen Kumar Sinha stated that officials are looking into the causes of these events and whether there is any connection between them. The state government has directed police to maintain law and order while ensuring that the investigation into the allegations related to LPU is evidence-based.
