Ranchi, February 20: The SIR (Systematic Voter’s List Revision) process in Jharkhand has sparked significant discussion. Babulal Marandi, the leader of the opposition in the state assembly, recently addressed the media regarding this matter.
He stated that SIR has already been conducted across the country, with a few states, including Jharkhand, still pending. Marandi emphasized that this is not the first time SIR is being implemented, as it has been a recurring process every ten years in India.
According to Marandi, SIR is essential for purifying the voter list. It will remove names of deceased individuals and those who have moved away. Additionally, it will eliminate names of those who have illegally registered as voters. He questioned why there should be any concern regarding this process.
Marandi accused the Congress party of consistently opposing SIR, particularly in favor of individuals who have illegally entered from Bangladesh and registered as voters. He argued that if their names are removed from the voter list, it would cause discomfort for the Congress party. He asserted that SIR is the responsibility of the Election Commission, which is conducting it nationwide, and it will also be successfully carried out in Jharkhand. He urged everyone to cooperate.
He further challenged the Congress party, asking what their stance is. Does the Congress want illegal voters to remain on the list? Should Bangladeshi infiltrators continue to be registered as voters? He insisted that the party should clarify its position openly.
Marandi reiterated that the Election Commission is responsible for overseeing this process. It is crucial that the names of deceased individuals are removed from the voter list. Only Indian citizens should have the right to vote in India, as they are the ones who will form the government.
In response to the SIR process, JDU legislator Saryu Rai stated that those who doubt the process are disrespecting the Supreme Court’s orders. He suggested that there may be self-interest in preventing SIR, as it would remove names that are incorrectly listed.
