Agartala, March 20: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha expressed confidence on Thursday that the BJP will secure victory in the Dharmanagar by-election scheduled for April 9. He stated that the party will connect with the public based on its development initiatives and strong candidates.
CM Saha announced that the party has nominated Jahar Chakraborty as its candidate, following the decision of the central leadership. He remarked, “He has been associated with the BJP for a long time and is a gentleman. The people of Dharmanagar know him well, which is a significant advantage for us.”
He referenced their longstanding relationship, noting that during previous party activities in Dharmanagar, Chakraborty often accompanied him, highlighting his deep connection with the region and the party.
The Chief Minister emphasized that the BJP takes every election seriously and is preparing not only for the by-election but also for the upcoming district council elections. He stated, “We are working on development projects under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and we will present these achievements to the public.”
Targeting opposition parties, Saha pointed out that the CPI(M) has declared its candidate, while the Congress has previously contested elections. He claimed that the opposition is currently facing challenges, but this will not affect the BJP’s prospects.
Regarding the elections for village committees under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), he mentioned that they have decided to conduct these separately to avoid logistical difficulties. Discussions are ongoing about the timing of the elections, considering the upcoming monsoon, and the matter is currently under review by the Supreme Court.
Notably, the elections for the 30-member TTAADC are set for April 12. According to State Election Commissioner Manoj Kumar, the last date for nominations is March 25, with scrutiny of nomination papers on March 26, withdrawal of candidacies by March 28, and counting of votes scheduled for April 17.
