
New Delhi, March 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has released its list of candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections in Maharashtra. Notable names include National General Secretary Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, among four candidates announced.
In addition to Tawde and Athawale, the list features Maya Chintaman Iwanate and Ramrao Kudkute.
Earlier, the BJP had unveiled a list of nine candidates for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections, which included the party’s National President Nitin Naveen from Bihar, along with Shivesh Kumar, Terash Gowala, Jogen Mohan from Assam, Lakshmi Verma from Chhattisgarh, Sanjay Bhatia from Haryana, Manmohan Samal, Sujit Kumar from Odisha, and Rahul Sinha from West Bengal.
On February 18, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the biennial Rajya Sabha elections to fill 37 vacant seats across 10 states. According to the commission, voting will take place on March 16 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with counting scheduled for the same day at 5:00 PM. The terms of 37 members elected from 10 states will expire in April 2026.
In light of the upcoming vacancies, the commission has prepared a detailed timeline for the electoral process. The election notification was issued on February 26, with the deadline for filing nominations set for March 5. Scrutiny of nomination papers will occur on March 6.
Candidates will have the option to withdraw their nominations until March 9.
The commission has specified that only a pre-defined purple pen, provided by the returning officer, will be valid for marking preferences on ballots. No other writing instruments will be permitted for this purpose.
To ensure a transparent and fair election process, observers will be deployed to monitor the entire procedure.
The outgoing members represent Maharashtra, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana.
