Dhaka, December 7: Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina faces another hearing in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) scheduled for December 9, local media reported on Sunday. This follows two court verdicts against her, including a death sentence handed down by the ICT for crimes against humanity, and a five-year imprisonment for corruption charges.

The ICT has charged Sheikh Hasina along with 13 former and current army officials for crimes against humanity linked to the Aynaghar detention centre during the Awami League’s long tenure. The tribunal has set December 9 for further proceedings, focusing on these allegations.

According to the Dhaka Tribune, the prosecution has completed its formal case presentation, and the tribunal will hear the defence arguments on Tuesday. The three-member ICT-1 bench, led by Justice MD Golam Mortuza Majumdar, fixed the date on Sunday.

Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam presented detailed reports on enforced disappearances and torture of government opposition members at Aynaghar. He noted that between October 22, 2015, and August 5, 2024, 26 individuals were abducted. The prosecution has filed five cases and requested the tribunal to frame charges or start trials against the 13 accused.

Among the 13 arrested are three army officers, who were brought under heavy security from Dhaka Cantonment’s special jail on Sunday morning. These officers include former DGFI Director Major General Sheikh Mohammad Sarwar Hussain, Brigadier General Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman Siddiqui, and Brigadier General Ahmed Tanveer Mazhar Siddiqui.

The ICT was originally established to try war crimes from 1971 but expanded its mandate in 2024-25 to include other cases.

This marks the third major case against Sheikh Hasina. Previously, she was sentenced to death on November 17, 2025, for crimes against humanity during the July 2024 student protests, a verdict she described as politically motivated. Subsequently, she and her family were convicted in the Purbaanchal land scam, resulting in a five-year jail term for her.
