Manama, March 9: Bahrain’s state-owned oil company, Bapco Energies, has declared a ‘force majeure’ on its operations. This declaration means that if oil supply is disrupted for any reason, the company will not be held liable as the circumstances are beyond its control.
This decision follows reports of thick smoke rising from the country’s main oil refinery. Earlier, the government confirmed that several individuals were injured and some property was damaged due to Iranian drone attacks in the Sitra area.
Bapco Energies operates Bahrain’s primary oil refinery and is a crucial player in the nation’s energy sector. The Bahrain News Agency reported that the company clarified that all local market needs are being met according to the existing plan, ensuring that supply continues. Bapco Energies values its relationships with all stakeholders and will keep them updated.
The military conflict between the U.S.-Israel and Iran has been ongoing for over a week, impacting the entire Middle East. In retaliation for U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, Iran has targeted bases and related centers established in the region.
Under the force majeure clause, the company is temporarily allowed to suspend or cancel its contractual obligations. This legal provision is granted when extraordinary events occur that are beyond the company’s control, preventing it from fulfilling its obligations. Consequently, the company is not liable for any damages incurred.
On the night of March 7-8, significant attacks were launched on oil facilities in Tehran, resulting in widespread fires and destruction throughout the city. Numerous images and videos surfaced on social media, showing Tehran engulfed in flames.
In response, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure sites signify a “dangerous phase” of the conflict and constitute a war crime.
He posted on social media platform X, stating, “By targeting fuel depots, the attackers are releasing dangerous and toxic elements into the air, poisoning the public, destroying the environment, and putting countless lives at risk.”
Baghaei further emphasized that the consequences of this environmental and human devastation will not be confined to Iran’s borders. He condemned these attacks as crimes against humanity and acts of genocide.
